My First IEM (In Ear Monitor) on Its Last Day.

Im selling off my Shure SCL3, bought used unit at RM300 on last 2months. Maybe some of you wondering, WTH RM300 for just an earphone?and its used one! It is actually a present for my last sem achievement, i asked my bro, Mr. Awan to sponsor me half of the price of the IEM. Somehow i also did wonder, How the RM600 (price of new Shure SCL3) earphone sounds like? and i decided to give a try.

Earphone Vs. IEM

The thing that differentiate earphone and IEM is earphone is created so that it sounds good when listening to music, so people will enjoy listening to the music. Therefore, engineers created a simple earphone that produce good bass. Why i say simple? Bass is just a few type of sound, doom! dam! boom! bam!, what else?

Therefore, obviously to design a good driver for IEM at mid and high frequency is more challenging. And to design an IEM that produce best sound at all frequency range is even harder. Usually triple drivers IEM do the job, and it will cost a bomb (cheapest triple drivers IEM is ~RM1500). The logic behind it is, if the bass is too powerful and punchy, it will overwhelms the music, means the mid and high will fade. At the same time, if they want to make the music sound clear, they have to lower the bass.

A Review:

Strength: Mid and High frequency (Hi-Fidelity). Noise isolation.

Shure SCL3 sounds really good at mid and high frequency where sound of most of the instrument lies and most important is the vocal of singer. In simple words, you can really differentiate the voice of singer and back up singer, identify the lyric sang and every instruments involved to create the song. You can hear something that you not aware before on normal earphone.

Weakness: Low frequency (bass)

The bass sounds flat. It need to be amp-ed by an amplifier or driven by a good player. This IEM is designed for studio and recording purpose perhaps.
